72420 Update A new English translation is being launched in September 2020 by Vehicule Press Available for pre order nowOriginal ReviewI learned about this book when it was referenced in the wonderful novel Lullabies for Little Criminals by Heather O Neill The protagonist of that book a street smart twelve year old named Baby has been carrying the novel around for a couple of weeks I pulled the paperback book out from under my mattress and examined it lovingly This was how I escaped the prison She is reading the original French version L aval e des aval s and describes it as the story of a young girl who was at once enraptured and furious with the world The person who gave Baby the novel told her that someone else has to give you this book you can t buy itI subseuently tried to buy it but uickly learned that the English translation is out of print and costs than 600 used The library didn t have a circulating book but o joy I finally managed to get a copy through their unpublicized Inter Library Loan program By the time I finally laid hands on it my desire and expectations of greatness scared me Could it possibly live up to my fantasyWhere to begin This book is extraordinary but I would never recommend it to anybody It is dark and complicated and I think you d only understand the development of a willfully isolated sociopath if you had grown up with an euivalent level of family dysfunction and were prone to deep introspection in other words not a sociopath yourself At the opening of the book first person protagonist Bernice is nine years old living in an abbey there are a lot of religious as well as mythological references I didn t understand on a river island in Montreal Canada and consciously choosing isolation from the ever warring parents who have divvied up possession of her and her brother She is banished to New York City for several years then finally at age fifteen to Israel in the middle of the Palestinian warWritten in the voice of a sophisticated intellectual mad philosopherpoet genius a writer s conceit that I immediately accepted Bernice deeply ponders the power of isolation and is committed to not loving with a rationale that is transcendentally and spiritually sophisticated an understanding of oneness that is both wrong and mind blowingly right She follows the perfect logic of a person who has been destroyed by parents who are also a source of love Wires crossed to the child love becomes something to hate survival depends on destroying anyone or thing that threatens love This is complicated stuff and the emotional line is pitch perfect The writing reels from realism to ever changing metaphors and euphemisms and dreamlike scenes It will be impossible to follow or understand for a lot of people and had I not worked so hard to get my copy of the book I might have given up But instead I surrendered the need to understand and suddenly I was understanding understanding an experience of multi generational upset and the twisted logic that makes love dangerous and hate safe in a way that doesn t communicate in words The book is harsh painful confusing and awful particularly with animal abuse which almost did me in But for the right reader extraordinaryHere are the opening lines If they pull you like a gravitational force maybe this book is for you Otherwise leave it alone it ll just annoy and confuse you Everything swallows me When my eyes are shut it s my inside that swallows me it s in my inside I stifle When my eyes are open I m swallowed because I see it s in the inside of what I see that I suffocateAnd if you can read it in the original French even better I m guessing See above link to purchase The English translation by Barbara Bray reuires the aid of a dictionary I can only imagine the French vocabulary Favorite word learned heimatlos stateless without a country which describes Bernice s profound exileBy the way the Goodreads rating system is completely inappropriate for this book It is not a book you like or love My 5 star rating has nothing to do with the fact that I often didn t like it at all It has to do with my awe uotient I m in awe that Ducharme wrote this and got it published82817 Update I am so sad to learn today of the death of author Rejean Ducharme A giant literary force who lived in near obscurity I learned about him from this article than was available when I read this book a few months ago RIP and thank you M DucharmeAlso after reading this novel I wrote to NYRBcom to suggest they republish the English version In a strange synchronicity the editor who received my email replied mistaking me for an in house colleague and through this mistake I learned that they are currently considering republishing the book in English in which case it will be widely available Let us hope
