This review can be found on my blog The MisAdventures of a Twenty Something Year Old GirlWhen I read the blurb I knew this was a book I wanted to read and review I thought it d be a YA young adult book since the main character is 15 but it read like a MG middle grade book Because it reminded me of a MG read I will be reviewing it as such However this was still a great readThe title didn t catch my attention but I think to a middle grade student the title would be very catchyThe cover is alright It s nothing special but I do feel it would appeal to a younger age groupThe world building was fantastic Sarah Norkus does an awesome job at making the world building very believable I m no history buff but Miss Norkus brings the Civil War era come alive I enjoyed reading about life during the Civil War It s obvious that Miss Norkus has done some research on this time periodThe pacing was slow at the very beginning I really wanted to like this book so I hung in there and I was greatly rewarded The pacing picks up when Em gets transported to Sarah Chamberlain s time and after that I was hooked on this bookI loved the plot Em finds a diary belonging to Sarah Chamberlain in an old house When Em starts blaming God for everything she is transported to the Civil War era However she ends up losing her memory and can t remember where she came from or anything from her modern life Being Christian I loved how the plot of this book had Christian themesI thought the characters were written fairly well Em is supposed to be 15 years old but I felt she acted and spoke like she was around 12 years old I had to constantly remind myself that she was a 15 year old girl Eventually I just stopped reminding myself of her age and just thought of her as being 12 Em is a very likable girl even if she does act young Sarah Chamberlain and Abby were both likable characters as well I found them to both be very sweet natured I loved how Moses was so protective of Sarah and her family and friends My favorite character was Rachael I loved how caring she was and how she would do anything for Sarah or for anyone for that matter I constantly wanted to just hug herAs I ve said before the dialogue suits a middle grade book than it does a young adult book I did find the way Em speaks as in the words she uses sometimes to be a little on the strange side Other then that the dialogue is good and it does flow smoothly It s just written a little young There s no swearing and only some violence Overall The Secret Diary of Sarah Chamberlain is a very enjoyable read It could ve been a bit better had the main character s age been lowered or if the writing had been young adultish It s a great story with a good message and interesting characters Plus there s a history lesson in itI d recommend this book those aged between 10 14 although any age would enjoy it Those who are interested in history and mysteries would enjoy this book the mostI d give The Secret Diary of Sarah SUMMARY ´ The Secret Diary of Sarah Chamberlain FREE READ ó IDELTA.US · Sarah Norkus FREE READ The Secret Diary of Sarah Chamberlain T to the attic before helping her mother clean the old house in Petersburg While scrubbing black scuffmarks off the kitchen floor Em has an emotional meltdown airing her list of grievances including Robert’s murder before God As she shouts that she doesn’t believe he really exists vertigo suddenly hits with a vengeance and she passes out Regaining consciousness Em is dumbfounded; the kitchen has been replaced by a nineteenth century parlo. It s summertime in 2008 and 15 year old Em spends her days playing basketball with her friends and helping her mother clean the Chamberlain House a historic building owned by the Petersburg Benevolent Ladies Society One day she is cleaning the attic and discovers the diary of Sarah Chamberlain which was written from 1860 to 1865 During this time the Civil War was going on and Sarah wrote about her life as a newlywed in her diary With the war coming to an end her husband Robert is arrested since he was fighting on the side of the south His guards thinking he knows where some hidden gold is eventually kill himAround this time Em is doubting the existence of God she s had and recovered from cancer her dog was hit by a car her aunt is losing her house and now she reads that Robert had died senselessly She passes out while cleaning the house and when she comes to she is still in the house but it s a few days before Robert is due to be killed She has amnesia and is taken care of by Sarah and her householdI like books about time travel This is the first book I ve read by this author and I liked it Though the story and writing style are directed at a YA reader I didn t find it was too immature for me The editing could have been tighter as there were some grammatical errors and typosThe author handled the time period well it was fun to read about Em trying to fit in with the clothes she arrived in capris and a tank top which in 1865 appeared to be underwear and manner of speech in 1865 cool and gross for example have different meanings than they do todayEm and Sarah and their family and friends have faith I m not religious but I didn t find it to be too overwhelmingI would recommend this book It would appeal to lovers of time travel and history Blog review post

SUMMARY ´ The Secret Diary of Sarah Chamberlain FREE READ ó IDELTA.US · Sarah Norkus FREE READ The Secret Diary of Sarah Chamberlain In the year 2008 fifteen year old Emily Grace Em discovers a secret hiding place under a wooden plank in the attic of an old house in Petersburg It conceals a 150 year old diary belonging to Sarah Chamberlain the previous owner of the house Carefully turning to the last entry Em’s interest is piued by the mention of missing confederate gold and a murder mystery She slips the diary into the pocket of her caprisAs she reads the diary Em is to. Imagine helping your mother clean up an old house that is part of the Historical Society s inventory and finding a loose board that holds an old old diary Would you tell your mother and give it up or would you keep it and read it Emily Grace called Em did what I would do She kept it to readMs Norkus mixes Civil War history time travel slavery and a modern girl all together in a story that I found fascinating The of the diary she reads the Em gets caught up in Sarah s life When she finds out Sarah s husband dies at the hands of the military she is devastatedThe author makes Em a young woman who has begun to fall away from God and her church She doesn t believe God is there None of her prayers get answered Reading about Sarah s husband Robert dying makes her angry and she shouts at God giving Him her whole list of grievances Em is fifteen and I remember what puberty was like I cried all the time Em carries a lot of anger What she didn t expect was to be transported back in time Apparently God does listen Going back 150 years means things are uite different there She finds Sarah and they take her in but she has no real plan to save RobertThe author works with the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution so her information about the times and practices of the era are accurate The only hesitation I had about the story was that Em changes history while she s there And any change you make in history would affect the future but the only thing that really changed in the future was the diary and a sign I had a difficult time believing nothing else was affectedOverall this is a very nice read and young women readers should find it fascinating There s history the beginning of romance for Em and it has a happy ending It also might lead them to read about the Civil War era The Christianity is lightly stated and not overwhelming Why not give it a try and see what you think
