The Girl Who Was Taken review Ï 103 read & download The Girl Who Was Taken Charlie Donlea one of the most original new voices in suspense returns with a haunting novel laden with twists and high tension about two abducted girls one who returns one who doesn't and the forensics expert searching for answersNicole Cutty and Megan McDonald are both high school seniors in the small town of Emerson Bay North Carolina When they disappear from a beach party one warm summer night police launch a massive search No clues are found and hope is almost lost until Megan miraculously surfaces after escaping from a bunker deep in the woods A year later the best selling account of her ordeal has turned Megan from local hero to national celebrity It's a triumphant inspiring story except for one inconvenient detail Nicole is still missingNicole's older sister Livia a fellow in forensic pathology expects that one day soon Nicole's body will be found and it will be up to someone like Livia to analyze the evidence and finally determine her sister's fate Instead the first clue to Nicole's disappearance comes from another body that shows up in Livia's morgue that of a young man connected to Nicole's past Livia reaches out to Megan for help hoping to learnabout the night the two were taken Other girls have gone missing too and Livia is increasingly certain the cases are connected But Megan knowsthan she revealed in her blockbuster book Flashes of memory are coming together pointing to something darker andmonstrous than her chilling memoir describes And the deeper she and Livia dig thethey realize that sometimes true terror lies in finding exactly what you've been looking for Cha. Not a bad book but it contained a couple key elements I don t love in my thrillers Totally a personal preferenceSYNOPSISNicole Cutty who has never exactly been described as demure seems to be going through a particularly wild phase the summer before she leaves for college She is taking a lot of risks seeking attention in all the wrong ways and dating an older mysterious man The whole town is turned upside down when both she and her arch rival Megan disappear from a party Two weeks later Megan reappears having escaped her captor but Nicole is still missing when the book opens a year laterNicole s sister Livia who is studying to be a medical examiner is desperate to find out what happened to Nicole The book flips back and forth between her present day search for Nicole and the weeks leading up to the abductionWHAT I LOVEDGood plot and characters Nicole isn t your typical sweet innocent kidnapping victim most books portray She definitely walks on the wild side and she was hard to like at times Her character definitely avoided being the cliche victimOne of the fringe characters Nate was fascinating to me He was super creepy and reading his observations was a glimpse into a truly disturbed mindSince uite a few of the male characters were a bit off I considered each of them as a potential suspect at one time or another Although I had considered the actual perpetrator at one time I wasn t sure until the very end I had a couple other guesses as wellI like psychological thrillers where the mindsets and thought processes of the characters are explored this book delivers on that for sureWHAT I DIDN T LOVENo new ground broken here and few parts seemed a little tired and done The very ending annoyed me I don t want to say too much or it will be a spoiler but it is not the way I like books to endOVERALLA good summer read if you re not looking for a light hearted romance to read on the beach or at the pool Don t expect it to change your life but expect to remain engaged throughout

Many recent popular mystery books feature girls and women in peril kidnapping assault torture murder The trend seems to place a female investigator often a police detective sometimes a reporter at the forefront of solving the crimes This story is told from the original viewpoint of Livia who works in forensic pathology and performs autopsies as part of her training My 35 star rating places it higher than most books of this type I have read lately It was a suspenseful uick read with a difficult puzzle to solveThe chapters are short and details the crimes and investigation keep switching back and forth in time This did not lead to confusion as the writing was so clearTwo girls went missing after a party celebrating the end of High School One girl Megan is well behaved popular intelligent and accomplished She is the daughter of a high ranking police officer The other Nicole was wild attention seeking and thought to be promiscuous and coincidentally happens to be Livia s much younger sister The girls were not friendsLivia is living with guilt for not being attentive to Nicole and ignoring a phone call from her just before she vanished She fears the next autopsy she performs will be on her sister s body As she examines the corpse of a young man thought to be a suicide she concludes he was murdered Later she learns he had close ties to her sister When not working at the pathology lab she is determined to find out what happened to Nicole about a year beforeAfter two weeks in captivity Megan escaped and is the author of a best selling book mostly written by her psychiatrist about her captivity and escape She has suppressed many memories of that ordealLivia uses her medical knowledge to link the disappearances to a couple of young women in neighbouring states She also learns of a weird club whose members are obsessed with missing people and carry out fake kidnappingsI admit I hadn t figured out who was guilty of the crimes and it was a surprising twist Some comments point to clues being there if you picked up on them There were other clues pointing elsewhere to mislead the readerA compelling fast paced read But Oh the last sentence was truly a curtain drop I enjoyed this interruption and hope Livia returns in a new series
